AppServer killed, no log!

Ok, this is not the first time I hear or see this so I feel like I need to blog about it – if your container (glassfish for instance) process seems to disappear with no exception or error of any kind, please check your code for System.exit() occurrences…

  1. Shouldn’t a container ignore System.exit() issued from one of its webapp, by default? At least, imo it should be configurable inside the server if the webapps are allowed to shut the whole server down…
    What do you think?

  2. Unless the JVM offers such a facility (similar to ignoring full GC’s), I don’t believe the container can do much about it. Do you know how other app servers deal with this?

  3. I once had the problem, and it seems that you can overide the system.exit behaviour with the SecurityManager, but I didn’t try it.
